Monitoring and evaluation in natural resource management
|
|
Why monitor and evaluate?
Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) provides information that helps us to manage our state's natural resources.
- In the short term we monitor and evaluate the projects that we fund to achieve our outcomes.
- In the long term we monitor and evaluate the natural resources that we want to protect and enhance.
Without monitoring and evaluating our actions, we cannot manage our natural resources properly.
What do we monitor?
In natural resource management we monitor:
- Project/program performance-inputs, outputs, processes and outcomes. This provides short-term data on the progress of NRM investments.
- Resource condition-status and trend of our natural resources on a local, regional, state or national scale. This provides long-term data that is crucial for identifying and tracking threats to our natural resources.
A well-designed monitoring program provides data that we can use to make good management decisions.
