Monitoring and evaluation
What about M&E in our state?

Since 2004 the State M&E Implementation Plan has coordinated monitoring and evaluation in Western Australia.

The plan (under review) assesses the performance of two programs:

The plan is based on the national program logic approach that states NRM improvements occur through:

  • funding activities that produce products and services (outputs).
  • these outputs contributing to intermediate and long-term outcomes.

How do we track progress?

We track progress by measuring against:

  • 3 to 5-year management action targets (MATs)
  • 20 to 50-year resource condition targets (RCTs).

Improvements to resource condition can take 50 years or more. In the short term, we also measure outputs to help us to demonstrate progress.

Who guides WA's monitoring and evaluation?

Two committees and the State M&E Team guide monitoring and evaluation in WA.

The WA Monitoring and Evaluation Advisory Committee (WA MEAC):

  • advises the state on the progress of M&E policy
  • coordinates and promotes the development of M&E within the state.

The State Evaluation Committee:

  • manages the State Evaluation Schedule.

What is our resource condition framework?

This framework is being developed to coordinate resource condition monitoring in Western Australia.

Where do we store the data?

The central repository for data we collect is the Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP). More information can be found at http://spatial.agric.wa.gov.au/slip/.

What are the resource condition monitoring projects?

Additional projects funded by NAP and NHT2 include:

  • Soils Resource Condition Monitoring (RCM)
  • Estuarine RCM
  • Inland aquatic RCM
  • Invasive species RCM
  • Land salinity RCM
  • Significant species RCM
  • Native vegetation RCM
  • Coastal and Marine RCM

The projects were approved in 2007 and are progressing well.

What state evaluations have been completed?

Four evaluations of the NAP and NHT2 program have been completed. These were based on the State Evaluation Schedule.
